Weeding Workshop - Hands on Training

The Collection Development librarians will be presenting a hands-on weeding workshop on Thursday, November 10, at the Johnson Neighborhood Library.  It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will last 2.5 hours.

This workshop is for those with collection management responsibilities who may be new to the system or need a refresher.

Material covered includes:

Why weeding is important

Houston Public Library weeding policy

Tools to weed dated materials

Tools to decide whether to weed or float materials that are not circulating, including Collection HQ

How to weed materials in poor condition

How to process out materials for float or discard

How to schedule weeding/floating into daily workflow

Thanks to the Johnson NL who will host us!  The workshop will include hands-on weeding in the Johnson collection, which is scheduled to be RFID-tagged in the near future.

Transfering Fiction Titles

The Collection Development Department, in conjunction with Neighborhood Libraries, has launched a pilot project to use CollectionHQ to transfer fiction titles between locations. This was discussed at the CollectionHQ training session held at the Central Library on 1/15/2015. If you are not familiar with this project, please read a copy of the e-mail related to the subject (below). Feel free to contact Collection Development (x31469) or Patrick Atkins with any questions.

The new dataset is now available in CollectionHQ for managers (or designee) to begin the shopping process.

You will have one week to do the appropriate shopping in the Popular Author Transfer as well as the Floating Pull tools.

Beginning next Friday(January 30th), the transfer list portion of the procedure will begin.

You will then have two weeks to finish the transfer process.

This includes finding and transferring the items to the location that has requested them.

Also, the new location must then check them in and place them on the shelf.

This should be complete by February 13th.

Remember to use the printed out PDF files from CollectionHQ as the transit slip for each batch of books going to a specific library.

New Collection Development Tool

The library has purchased a new online tool that allows staff analyze the collection. It is called CollectionHQ. With this tool, you can run reports to find items with no recent circulation or items that might be missing. You can even get reports showing what parts of the Dewey range do (or do not) circulate at your location.

In order to run reports in CollectionHQ, you will need watch two video tutorials. They are now available on the G drive, in the 'CollectionHQ GoLive Day1' & 'CollectionHQ GoLive Day2' folders. Once you have completed these tutorials, Lin Swalley (x31479) will assign you an ID and password.
